Acne is the most common human skin disease worldwide. Most people have acne to varying degrees at some point in their lives. Sebum is a waxy, oily substance made by cells in the skin known as sebocytes. Sebum helps protect the skin, however it can mix with dead skin cells, dirt, or other pollutants and become trapped inside a skin pore. This clogged pore then becomes acne. Many factors can affect the severity of acne, including genetic factors, the degree of sebum production, psychological stress levels, diet, hormonal imbalances, and some medications.
Cannabidiol, or CBD, a nonintoxicating compound (or cannabinoid) in cannabis is one of the most abundant active compounds in the plant. A study published in 2014 examined the effects of CBD on human sebocytes and found that CBD prevented these cells from creating too much sebum. The study also found that CBD oil triggered an anti-inflammatory reaction in the cells and prevented inflammatory substances from triggering acne. As a result, CBD appeared to help prevent further breakouts.
To use CBD oil to treat acne, simply apply it directly to the affected areas of skin. After consulting your healthcare professional, CBD may be taken by mouth in a full-spectrum tincture or capsule form as it may also be effective in treating acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties which are still active when the bloodstream carries CBD to the skin. However, studies showing the beneficial effects of CBD on acne have examined CBD oil applied directly to the skin, so a topical application may be best.
There are many CBD products on the market, so shop carefully. Use only a CBD oil product that is tested for contaminants and compares the CBD vs. the levels of other compounds in the oil. And look for a product that has received a certificate of analysis (COA) which ensures that it has been tested and has met laboratory standards.
It’s also highly recommended that you use an organic CBD oil. The hemp plant is a “bioaccumulator,” which means that it tends to absorb toxic substances from the air, soil, and water. So using an organic CBD product will ensure that you aren’t also ingesting toxic substances.
